What Is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a non-toxic system of medicine used to treat illness and relieve discomfort of a wide variety of health conditions. It is practiced by licensed physicians and other qualified prescribers in many regions of the world, including Europe, Asia, the U.K., and the U.S. Information on the use of several hundred remedies has been collected for nearly two centuries by homeopathic practitioners, through research studies known as “provings,” as well as documented clinical cases and recent scientific trials.

The Law of Similars and Potentization
Two important ideas on which the science of homeopathy is based are the Law of Similars and potentization. Simply expressed, the Law of Similars states that since exposure to a substance can cause specific symptoms in a healthy person, that substance—when correctly prepared as a homeopathic remedy—can stimulate the body’s curative powers to overcome similar symptoms during illness.

For example: A person who chops an onion can develop watery eyes, a runny nose, sneezing, coughing, and throat irritation from exposure to the onion’s active substances. The homeopathic remedy, Allium cepa, made of potentized red onion, can help the body overcome a cold or allergy attack in which the person has similar symptoms (watery eyes, runny nose, sneezing, coughing, or throat irritation.) The actual symptoms of the illness were not caused by exposure to an onion, but the remedy made from the onion can help the body overcome them, because the symptoms are similar.

Potentization is a process that involves a series of precise dilutions and succussions (succussion is a vigorous shaking action). A substance has to undergo this process to be useful as a homeopathic remedy. Potentization is very important, because the repeated process of dilution and succussion brings about an energetic change that gives the substance a deeper curative effect. Repeated dilution removes all chance of chemical toxicity, allowing the homeopathic use of many substances that would otherwise not be safe to take as medicine.

The safety and non-toxicity of homeopathic remedies is reassuring; however, they still must be chosen carefully on the basis of specific information—and used correctly—or they may affect the symptoms only superficially, or have no effect at all. Homeopathic remedies are not selected simply to treat an isolated symptom or a named disease. To work correctly, they must be chosen to match the way an individual’s system expresses its unique response to the current stress and illness. Even within the same diagnosis, different people respond to different remedies.

Dental Care Health Center

A healthy mouth reflects a healthy body. Take care of your gums and teeth to not only protect your smile, but also reduce your risk for several health concerns too.

Tooth Decay

Tooth decay is the gradual breakdown of the tooth, beginning with the enamel surface and eventually progressing to the inner pulp.

Tooth decay is caused by acids produced by certain mouth bacteria in dental plaque. Factors that affect this process include oral hygiene, diet, meal frequency, saliva production, and heredity. Teeth with significant decay are said to have caries, or cavities.

Keep that smile on your face by protecting and strengthening your teeth and gums. According to research or other evidence, the following self-care steps may reduce the number of trips to the dentist:

Protect your pearly whites
Try over-the-counter toothpastes (Gel-Tin, Stop) and mouthwashes (ACT, Fluorigard) to help protect your teeth and make them stronger

Discover xylitol
Chew gum containing xylitol to reduce the activity of cavity-causing bacteria

Battle the bad bugs
Inhibit cavity-causing bacteria by adding lactobacillus GG to children’s milk

Pass up sticky sweets
Cut down on cavity-causing bacteria by avoiding sugary foods that stick to your teeth or stay in the mouth for a long time

Keep an eye on hygiene
Prevent tooth decay by brushing and flossing regularly, and visiting your dentist's office for fluoride treatments and periodic cleanings

These recommendations are not comprehensive and are not intended to replace the advice of your doctor or pharmacist. Click Here to continue reading the full tooth decay article for more in-depth, fully-referenced information on medicines, vitamins, herbs, and dietary and lifestyle changes that may be helpful.

Glucosamine for Sports & Fitness

What is Glucosamine?
Glucosamine is an important building block needed by the body to manufacture specialized molecules called glycosaminoglycans, found in cartilage.

Where is it found?
Glucosamine is not present in significant amounts in most diets. Supplemental sources are derived from the shells of shrimp, lobster, and crab, or may be synthesized.

Why do athletes use it?*
Some athletes say that glucosamine helps reduce joint pain.

What do the advocates say?*
For a long time, glucosamine dominated the market among supplements used to ease joint pain. Now, many practitioners prefer to use a combination of both glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate. Many have found this combination to be effective, particularly for runners, who tend to develop problems with their knees. Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are well absorbed by the molecules that make up cartilage. They are not available from food. It is not uncommon to have to take these supplements indefinitely to continue to experience relief.

Recent research has shown that the result of arthroscopic surgery for osteoarthritis in the knee is no different than that of placebo. This gives people further reason to at least give supplements, such as glucosamine sulfate, a try before enduring more invasive, expensive approaches.

How much is usually taken by athletes?
Glucosamine sulfate, 1,500 mg per day, is effective for reducing joint pain caused by osteoarthritis according to most studies, whether other forms of glucosamine, such as glucosamine hydrochloride, are as effective for joint pain as glucosamine sulfate is unclear at this time, but studies have found some benefits from the use of the hydrochloride form. Other uses of glucosamine for sports and fitness, including prevention of joint pain or treatment of sports injuries, have not been studied.

Are there any side effects or interactions?
At the amount most frequently taken by adults—500 mg three times per day of GS—adverse effects have been limited to mild reversible gastrointestinal side effects. In one trial, people with peptic ulcers and those taking diuretic drugs were more likely to experience side effects.

Animal research has raised the possibility that glucosamine could contribute to insulin resistance. This effect might theoretically result from the ability of glucosamine to interfere with an enzyme needed to regulate blood sugar levels.9 However, available evidence does not suggest that taking glucosamine supplements will trigger or aggravate insulin resistance or high blood sugar. Two large, 3-year controlled trials found that people taking GS had either slightly lower blood glucose levels or no change in blood sugar levels, compared with people taking placebo. Until more is known, people taking glucosamine supplements for long periods may wish to have their blood sugar levels checked; people with diabetes should consult with a doctor before taking glucosamine and should have blood sugar levels monitored if they are taking glucosamine.

In 1999 the first case of an allergic reaction to oral GS was reported. Allergic reactions to this supplement appear to be rare.

Some GS is processed with sodium chloride (table salt), which is restricted in some diets (particularly for people with high blood pressure).

The theory that GS and chondroitin sulfate work synergistically in the treatment of osteoarthritis remains unproven.

*Athletes and fitness advocates may claim benefits for glucosamine based on their personal or professional experience. These are individual opinions and testimonials that may or may not be supported by controlled clinical studies or published scientific articles on glucosamine.

Reiki

Reiki is a form of spiritual healing which emerged in the early 20th century in Japan. Reiki is defined as a complementary healing art for the treatment of body, mind and emotional conditions. Reiki Practitioners called Reiki Masters use a technique similar to the laying on of hands, which will channel "healing energy" through their palms to bring about healing for themselves or others.

Reiki believes in a universal life force energy which can be accessed by practitioners and believers to induce a healing effect. The Reiki Master uses this healing energy to activate or enhance the natural healing processes of an individual through their own so-called powers which are assisted by the “intention” and beliefs of their patient.

Marriage & Family Therapists

Marriage & Family Therapy is also referred to as couple and family therapy and family systems therapy, is a branch of psychotherapy that works with families and couples in intimate relationships to nurture change and development. It tends to view change in terms of the systems of interaction between family members. It emphasizes family relationships as an important factor in psychological health.

What the different schools of family therapy have in common is a belief that, regardless of the origin of the problem, and regardless of whether the clients consider it an "individual" or "family" issue, involving families in solutions is often beneficial. This involvement of families is commonly accomplished by their direct participation in the therapy session. The skills of the family therapist thus include the ability to influence conversations in a way that catalyzes the strengths, wisdom, and support of the wider system.

In the field's early years, many clinicians defined the family in a narrow, traditional manner usually including parents and children. As the field has evolved, the concept of the family is more commonly defined in terms of strongly supportive, long-term roles and relationships between people who may or may not be related by blood. Family therapy has been used effectively in the full range of human dilemmas; there is no category of relationship or psychological problem that has not been addressed with this approach.

Acne Rosacea

About acne rosacea
Acne rosacea, now more accurately known just as rosacea, is a chronic skin condition of the forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin. It consists of flushing, which turns into red coloration from the dilation of the capillaries and can lead to pustules that resemble acne.

Rosacea occurs mostly in middle-aged adults with fair skin. The cause of rosacea is unknown, but there is likely a genetic component. Severe, untreated rosacea can be disfiguring to the face.

The redness on your cheeks, nose, and chin may be signs of acne rosacea. How can you calm it down and put your best face forward? According to research or other evidence, the following self-care steps may be helpful:

Steer clear of irritants
Flare-ups may occur from too much sun exposure, stress, exercise, spicy food, or alcohol, or from extreme (hot or cold) weather or bathing-water temperatures. These recommendations are not comprehensive and are not intended to replace the advice of your doctor or pharmacist. Continue reading the full acne rosacea article for more in-depth, fully-referenced information on medicines, vitamins, herbs, and dietary and lifestyle changes that may be helpful.

What are the symptoms?
The skin of the center of the face—typically on or surrounding the nose—is red and swollen, with acne-like blemishes. As the condition progresses, parts of the eye can become inflamed and the nose may enlarge.

Dietary changes that may be helpful

Alcohol may increase the reddening of the skin affected by rosacea, but alcohol is not the cause of this disease. Spicy foods and hot drinks have been reported anecdotally by rosacea sufferers to cause flare-ups, but no controlled research has evaluated these claims. One small, preliminary report suggested that fasting followed by a vegan diet (allowing no animal flesh foods, dairy products, or eggs) had only small and inconsistent effects on rosacea.

Lifestyle changes that may be helpful
Sun exposure, stress, excessive exercise, and extreme temperatures (hot or cold) of weather or bathing water may trigger flare-ups of rosacea, so avoiding these conditions is recommended.

The Purpose of Hyperbaric Therapy

The Hyper-OxyÔ portable Hyperbaric Chamber is considered mild hyperbaric chamber used for oxygen therapy to help restore and maintain health and fitness. Treatment in the Hyper-OxyÔ chamber increases the uptake of oxygen in the body, through increased pressurization to 3 psi (pounds per square inch), which causes the blood plasma and tissue fluids to become super saturated with oxygen. The effects are cumulative. The body begins to function more efficiently as it restores its oxygen balance closer to the higher natural range it was originally designed to function with. The body utilizes oxygen better, promotes healing and improves health, fitness, stamina and endurance. It helps reverse the physical and psychological effects of oxygen deprivation from air pollution- water pollution - aging.

Treatments in the Hyper-OxyÔ Hyperbaric chamber provide a safe, highly effective method for delivering and increasing the oxygen levels to all body systems. The purpose of increasing the pressure is simply to increase oxygen uptake by dissolving more oxygen into the bloodstream. Increasing oxygen helps to eliminate harmful toxic substances and stimulate capillary growth and tissue repair.

Increased pressure makes air denser, which provides more oxygen molecules per unit. Laminar flow in lungs is improved under hyperbaric through streamline, creating less resistance in the alveoli, and the transport time of the blood through the alveolar capillaries is greatly reduced. Increasing the pressure gradient by which oxygen defuses, results in a higher level of arterial blood saturation with oxygen.

Food Tips

“Eat five different kinds of fruits and vegetables every day to recapture the disease-preventing phytochemicals missing in the American diet.” - Dr. James Duke, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)

Shop on the outside aisles of grocery stores or in natural foods sections where the freshest whole foods are generally found.

Organize your shopping list by categories and, preferably, by aisles in the store.

Be flexible and take advantage of seasonal vegetables and fruits.

Vitamin and mineral supplements are no substitute for a variety of foods. ...Fruits, vegetables and grains contain a synergistic mix of micronutrients that haven’t been duplicated in pills or capsules. Eating a wide range of foods from the plant kingdom is considered better than relying on supplements.” - Dietary Guidelines for Americans, USDA

“The key that opens the door to variety and moderation is balance.” - Stephanie Belling, M.D., Author of Power Foods

A simple formula for dietary improvement: Follow these inexpensive, simple rules to improve your diet.

Consume the following:

One fruit at each meal or snack

One vegetable at lunch, dinner, and as a snack

One whole grain or starchy vegetable at every meal

One serving of beans or legumes per day

Use seeds and nuts as a healthy garnish

When you buy packaged and prepared foods, read the labels carefully and consider the impact of that particular food on your day’s food plan.

Avoid those products loaded with ingredients high in saturated fats and hydrogenated oils.

When the recipe calls for sugar, think about cutting back or substituting fruit.

Make your own substitution or alternatives list. For example, when the recipe calls for cream, substitute with evaporated skim milk. When your chili recipe calls for ground beef, you might think about substituting bulghur wheat or a meat substitute.

Substitute cooking methods when there is a more desirable way. For instance, there is no need to use a deep frying method to produce crisp flavorful potatoes; you can bake them at a high temperature instead. There is no need to thicken soups with cream; you can use pureed white beans, starch vegetables, or tofu instead.

Try new combinations or varieties of foods. Jerusalem artichokes or broccoli make wonderful low-fat dips or spreads when pureed with the herbs of your choosing.

Experiment with one new food a week to expand your horizons. Think about one of the less common grains, like quinoa or an exotic vegetable like radicchio or kohlrabi.

Try ways to make vegetables or legumes your main course for some of your meals.

When eating out, don’t think you are necessarily limited to the choices on the menu. Many chefs are happy to make changes and substitutions when you make a request.

Diet improvements for heart disease might include:

Eating beans and legumes as substitutes for meat.

Eating more garlic, along with its relatives: onions, leeks, and scallions.

Food high in antioxidants: yellow, orange and dark green vegetables, and fruits.

Increasing fiber consumption by eating whole grains, beans, and legumes.

Reducing overall fat intake, while making monounsaturated fats, like olive oil, canola oil, and walnuts your main source of oil.

Diet improvements for hypertension might include foods high in potassium and magnesium, such as:

Certain fruits, like apricots, bananas, berries, and melons.

Legumes and vegetables, like broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, and spinach.

Good bets: These foods represent good general choices for people without known food allergies or dietary restrictions. You should always check with your doctor or a dietician when planning changes in your diet.

How Do I Safely Exercise in the Sun?

Your guide to safe summer fitness

by Kathleen Finn

After a long winter of rain, snow, and ice—and more than a few cancelled workouts—getting outside to move your body is a physical and psychological boon. The sun stimulates production of vitamin D, an essential nutrient for bone development, and serotonin, a neurotransmitter that is partly responsible for our feelings of emotional contentment. So, take advantage of the sun’s rays, but exercise a few precautions and you’ll have an energizing rather than exhausting summer fitness routine.

Timing is everything
Plan your outdoor workouts for early morning or late afternoon. The sun is at its hottest from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., putting you at risk for dehydration, sunburn, and heat-related conditions. If the temperature climbs to 90°F (32°C) or higher, substitute your planned strenuous activity with a more moderate one. Be strategic when choosing your running, walking, and biking routes; look for shaded bike paths, parks, and trails.

Good fashion sense
Start your day by slathering on sunscreen labeled SPF 15 or higher. Sports sunscreens provide additional water- and sweat-proof protection—especially important for swimmers, kayakers, and other water-bound sports enthusiasts. Dress in light-colored clothing to deflect the sun’s rays. A tightly woven shirt will keep out vexing UV rays and should cover your back, shoulders, and neck. Make sure your clothing is loose fitting so sweat has a chance to evaporate, keeping you cool and comfortable. Don’t forget your helmet, hat, or bandana. Top off your outfit with UV-protection sunglasses.

Drink up!
Sun mixed with humidity can be a dangerous combination if you add strenuous exercise. Normally a hot body cools itself by sweating. When humidity levels rise, sweat doesn’t evaporate as quickly and your body temperature can spike dangerously. This can lead to heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and, worst-case scenario, heatstroke. Staying hydrated is your best defense. Adults of average weight should drink 12 cups (2.84 liters) of water a day. People of above-average weight should drink additional liquids. Physically active school-age kids should drink 6 to 8 cups (1.42 to 1.9 liters) a day.

During your workout, if you feel weak, dizzy, or nauseated—stop! Get out of the sun and hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Seek out a shady tree and a tall glass of iced lemonade, and put off your workout for another day. This is one situation where procrastination is a good thing.

To assist you in your journey to wellness-based living, the Alternative Health Connection offers an in-depth database of articles. You'll find an abundance of information on topics ranging from alternative and complimentary practices and therapies to information on health conditions, natural health, nutrition and self-care. Massage Therapy

Massage therapy is one of the oldest healthcare practices. It is the practice of soft tissue manipulation. Massage involves acting and manipulating the body with pressure structured, unstructured, stationary or moving tension, motion, or vibration done manually or with mechanical aids for the purpose of normalizing those tissues. These techniques affect all body systems.

The philosophy of massage therapy encompasses the concept of ris medicatrix naturae, aiding the ability of the body to heal itself and aimed at achieving or increasing health well being.

The Joy Of Loving Myself

Rayna Lumbard, LMFT
We’ve heard it all before: “All you need is love” and “Love is all you need.” How many songs, conversations and practices really focus on being kind and loving to ourselves? In today’s “stressed out” world we are bombarded with the reality of unhappy or unhealthy relationships, careers, finances, health issues and other challenges. How do you really feel about the state of your inner world? If you are plagued with self-doubts, pessimistic people or negative situations, then you probably could use a big boost of self-love. The more you love yourself, the easier life becomes! Igniting your positive personal power or InnerSuccess puts a smile on your face and stimulates positive thoughts, beliefs, feelings and actions, which are the foundation for a thriving, abundant life.

Raising your self-esteem means being happy with who you are and feeling your true inner love, joy, peace, bliss and abundance. This connects your innate passion and energy to meaningful actions that manifest your dreams!

Are you suffering from negative self-talk such as this: I’m bad, unlovable, dumb, not OK, not worthy, not good enough and unimportant? These beliefs create emotional, physical, mental and spiritual pain. How sick and tired are you with thinking and acting in ways that sabotage your relationships, career, finances, health or life in general?  Shifting negative decisions into positive self-talk lifts your spirits and your life! One way to start loving yourself more is by accepting who, where and what you are right now. Be grateful knowing your life adventure is a special gift from God that has been given to you to enjoy. Expect good outcomes and fill your heart with appreciation for your own accomplishments, gifts, talents and uniqueness. It’s important to pamper yourself and feed your body healthy food and good water. Hanging out with nourishing people with good energy who enjoy and support you is love magnified! Happy people attract kindred spirits who want to laugh and play. Remember life is a game, so take yourself lightly, like the angels. Allowing life to flow makes your lessons easier and your personal growth accelerated. Take one day at a time and stay grounded in who you are and what's important. Be spontaneous as well as mindful and focused in a balance that works for you.

Take a moment to breathe in a deep sense of knowing that all is in divine order in your universe. If a part of you needs healing (emotions, body, or spirit), breathe in love from the Universe or healing energy from the earth and send positive thoughts, a healing color or a gentle touch wherever it feels good.

New and meaningful adventures await us all in the new millennium. It’s time to join together in creating everyday miracles that bring healing to ourselves and each other. Let’s generate love instead of hate, compassion instead of indifference, and positivity. Only then will the higher energetic vibrations of love and peace heal our cells (selves), our families, communities and the nations of the world and ensure that our precious Mother Earth will thrive and support all sentient beings.

Planning your next vacation? Try these helpful, healthful tips

Tamara Seymour
No matter where you’re heading on your next vacation—to the other side of the country or the other side of the planet—remember that your health comes first. With a little planning, careful packing, and conscientious traveling, you and your family can steer clear of unwelcome surprises and arrive home healthy, happy, and revitalized. Before you hit the road, take a look at these tried and true travel tips.

Do your homework

Preparing for a safe and healthy vacation should include gathering as much information as possible about where you’re going and what you expect to do. Ask yourself a couple of key questions:

  • Am I traveling to a place that may pose health risks? If you’re going abroad, ask your healthcare provider at least six weeks in advance what immunizations or medications you and your family may need to protect yourself against common travel diseases, such as diarrhea and hepatitis.
  • Am I healthy right now? Start focusing on health and fitness prior to departure. Strengthen your immune system by getting plenty of rest and eating right. Get that heart pumping and build up your endurance through exercise, especially if your vacation involves strenuous activities, like hiking or biking.
Pack like a pro

Vacations are never completely predictable, even when you’ve spent weeks planning. So it’s good to be prepared for just about anything. To make packing less of a chore, check off these four items first:

· The right clothing—Know your destination’s weather conditions and terrain and pack accordingly. Include sturdy shoes and clothing that protects you from sunburn and insect bites and stings.

· Travel-friendly first aid—A basic travel first aid kit should include fever reducers, an antiseptic, bandages, antidiarrheals, antacids, and insect repellent. Planning to jump aboard a boat or venture down bumpy back roads? Consider adding motion sickness remedies. Packing prescription meds? Be sure to bring along a copy of the prescription.

· Vital vitamins—Visiting new places can mean major modifications to your diet. Vitamin supplementation can replenish the nutrients that may be missing from your vacation meals.

· Super-sized sunscreen—Many vacations involve spending lots of time in the warm, welcoming sun. But remember—the sun’s rays may be more intense than what you’re used to at home. Don’t let sunburn spoil the fun.

Let good sense be your guide

Once you’ve arrived to your vacation spot, take steps to reduce risks and guard your good health. Follow these guidelines to avoid common travelers’ troubles:

· Rest easy—Jet lag leaves you listless, and is often triggered by traveling across time zones. If your vacation includes an extended journey, take a day to rest once you arrive and let your body adjust. Then gradually add some activity as your energy level improves.

· Watch what you eat (and drink)—You’ll want to sample the local fare, but beware: traveler’s diarrhea is one of the most common health problems people encounter while vacationing. The culprit: usually microorganisms found in food or water. If the drinking water is questionable, buy bottled. Stay away from raw or undercooked meats and seafood. Choose clean and well-attended restaurants.

· Feed your thirst—Stay hydrated. Dehydration can sometimes go unnoticed until it’s bad enough to require medical attention. Carry a water bottle with you and take frequent chugs, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

How much do you know about Metabolic Syndrome?

Dr. Carol E. Shwery, DC, CCN

If you’re a follower of health news, chances are you’ve come across the term metabolic syndrome. This increasingly prevalent medical condition is used to describe a collection of health risks, such as: insulin resistance, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, low HDL or good cholesterol, high LDL or bad cholesterol, and abdominal obesity. When 3 or more of these signs appear together in an individual – the definition of metabolic syndrome – the risk for type 2 diabetes, stroke and heart disease are significantly increased. It is estimated that more than 64 million Americans currently have this condition.

Although its name may still be elusive to the general public, it is a hot topic in many health/medical circles. In the 2006 meeting of the American Diabetic Association, it was reported that half of all Americans will develop insulin resistance, a dominant underlying risk factor for metabolic syndrome, Also according to 1 expert, if metabolic syndrome was fully detected and treated, heart Attacks would be reduced by 63%. When you consider that heart disease is the number 1 cause of death for men and women in the U.S., the implications of metabolic syndrome are profound.

For many individuals, the diagnosis of this well documented but often overlooked disorder has really saved their health. Even better is the news that the treatment is frequently lifestyle (diet and exercise) oriented.

The exact cause of metabolic syndrome is not known; however it is primarily associated with insulin resistance – a condition in which the body can’t use insulin efficiently. (Insulin is a hormone that helps move sugar out of the blood and into the cells in the body, where it is needed for energy and nourishment.)

Therefore factors that increase your chances of having insulin resistance also apply to metabolic syndrome and include:

- Lack of physical activity

- Overweight/overfat

- Poor dietary habits

- genetic factors

Therapeutic lifestyle changes (TLC) are the preferred means of managing metabolic syndrome. Essentially, this strategy includes a sensible diet, regular exercise, body composition (percent body fat) improvement, and stress management. Of course, quitting smoking is critical as well. Also targeted nutritional supplementation can provide additional support in protecting and maintaining your health naturally.
